Top 5 Benefits of Sunvisors for Aircraft Pilots: Enhanced Safety & Comfort

Operating an aircraft comes with unique challenges, and we all know that visibility is crucial to maintaining safety. As a pilot long before I worked at Rosen, one thing that I appreciated in any plane that had them, was high quality sunvisors.  When I bought my first airplane with two Cousins, an OMF Symphony 160, one of the first items added for an already quite modern plane for 2009, was a set of Sunvisors.  The benefits of sunvisors in an airplane may seem obvious, but there might be more reasons that you've thought of as to how they can improve your flying experience:
  1. Reduced Glare for Clear Vision
The first and most obvious reason is that intense sunlight can be disorienting and distracting. Rosen’s sunvisors are designed to block harsh sunlight, significantly reducing glare while not restricting your vision like a traditional opaque sunvisor. Our visors are made from Neutral Density Acrylic, meaning that colors won't shift when coming through the lens.  Everything retains a natural, look with the added benefit of sun reduction.  This means you can be more aware of your surroundings, when you need it most, improving safety during takeoff, in route, and on landing.
  2. Improved Pilot Comfort
Anyone who's done a 3 hr plus leg of a cross country (especially without autopilot) knows that long flights can be exhausting.  If you're unlucky enough to flying east in the morning or west in the evening, you've no doubt had to deal with the sun directly into your eyes. Rosen’s sunvisors provide UV protection and heat reduction, creating a more comfortable cockpit. This leads to less eye strain and fatigue, allowing you to stay sharp and responsive throughout your journey.  Some pilots say they'd just as soon where sunglasses, and to each their own, but I use both.  Sunglasses are great too for cutting down the overall ambient light, and then I flip the sunvisor down to help further darken the sun when it's right in my vision.
  3. Enhanced Safety in All Conditions
Whether pilots are flying into the setting sun or above the clouds where light reflection is intense, sunvisors help maintain visibility. Near where I spent a lot of my youth in Agness, Oregon, an experienced, commercially rated pilot crashed into a ridge in the Rogue River Canyon on approach to Half Moon Bar.  While we don't know for sure, the FAA report points out the fact that as he was turning around in the canyon he would have been pointed directly into the morning sun at the time of accident.  They listed it as a likely contributing factor in their report.  Rosen’s adjustable sunvisors are built to be adjustable to almost any position, ensuring they can be where you need them, and I have found them to be invaluable on a number of takeoffs and landings.
  4. Durability and Reliability
Made from high-quality materials, Rosen’s sunvisors are built to withstand the unique demands of aviation. Our visor assemblies are made of anodized, machined aluminum and offer long-lasting protection, ensuring that pilots have reliable sun protection for years to come.
  5. Customization for Every Cockpit

We offer a variety of customizable solutions to fit different types of aircraft, from small private planes to large commercial jets. Experimental and certified.  With adjustable features, our sunvisors ensure optimal functionality for any cockpit layout.

Whether you're piloting a commercial jet, a private plane, or a helicopter, sun attenuation protection is and important key for a safe and comfortable flight. Our aviation visors offer the glare reduction pilots need. I invite you to explore our full range of aviation sunvisors and see what you might be missing!
